Las Vegas traffic whizzed past on the streets below. Brock and I leaned on the balcony railing, sipping a sweet and spicy merlot.

“So when we first met in New York,” Brock began, “didn’t you say you were some kind of designer?”

I laughed. “Ah, yeah. That was my old job. Product design.”

“So what’d you design?” he asked.

“Picture frames,” I said through gritted teeth.

He blinked. “Picture frames?”

“You know all those cheap picture frames you can buy at department stores? Well, someone had to design them.” My thumbs went to my chest. “And that someone was me.”

“That’s so random,” he said. “How the hell did you get into that?”

“I went to school for design.”

“Nice! I always wanted an art hoe girlfriend,” he said, his big hand grazing my arm.

I laughed—I’d seen the memes about big titty art hoe girlfriends.

“A hockey player who’s into memes, huh?”

“Hey, with all that time we spend on a plane, there’s not much else to do but browse memes,” he said.

“You’re lucky I’m into memes, too, or I might’ve slapped you for calling me a hoe.”

“That was a risk I was willing to take,” he said confidently. “Because if you weren’t into memes? I’m just not sure it’d work out between us, Sofia.”

My heart fluttered. Was he really wondering if things could work out between us?

“Touché,” I said.

He grinned. “So you learned how to design picture frames in art school, then?”

I thought it was cute he wanted to know more, but I was afraid I’d bore the man to tears if I told him how production design worked.

“The design I did was more in the packaging than the frames themselves,” I said, purposely keeping things vague. But Brock wanted me to expand. “Basically, a factory would send me samples of molding profiles they could make. I’d pick the profiles I liked, and which material they’d make it out of. The actual designing I did was the marketing material, and putting it all together in a neat package, so we could attract bulk buyers from major retailers.”

“That is certainly … interesting,” he said, his eyes having glossed over.

“I told you it was boring!” I said and gingerly punched his shoulder.

“Hey, when it comes down to it, everyone’s job is boring. I’m sure I could put you to sleep with the Xs and Os of hockey, if you really wanted me to.”

I shook my head. “Nope! No thank you. Heard enough of that from my dad growing up.”

“I bet,” he said. “So what made you move to Vegas, anyway?”

“Well, I—” I hesitated. “Obviously, Dad got the GM job, and he practically begged me to move out here. I think he feels like he missed out on me growing up, because he was always on the road when I was little.”

“Yeah, that’s tough,” he said. “But New York to Vegas, that’s a big move.”

“I know. But the thing is, I needed a big change in my life.”

“Picture frames weren’t your life’s calling, eh?” he teased.

“Jerk!” I poked him in the abdomen—or tried to, anyway, but all I ended up doing was stubbing my finger on a brick wall of muscle.
